Bernard and Katherine Read Papers, 1902-1964

These papers document Bernarnd Read's work as ascientist in China from 1909 to 1949, as well as the life of his family inChina and his internment during the Japanese occupation of Shanghai, 1941-1945.Bernard Read was not directly engaged by a missionary agency but spent thefirst part of his career in China at the Peking Union Medical College, a unionventure related to various mission agencies. Read left the Peking Union MedicalCollege due to disagreements with its leaders, and went to work for the HenryLester Institute, an organization financed by an American businessman inShanghai.

Read was a pharmacologist who taught at Peking Medical College from 1909 to 1932 and later was Head of Physiological Services and Director of the Henry Lester Institute of Medical Research in Shanghai.
